SOOJI HALWA!

  • IMG_7032
Sooji or semolina Halwa is a traditional Indian sweet which is a sweetheart of every member of Indian families. Easy and quick to make this holy recipe is heavenly in taste and is very nutritious for kids. I am calling it holy because this is the main Prasad ( food offering to God) we offer Goddess Durga during navratras.People in India make sooji halwa in various ways but I make the way my mother makes it.
My both kids just love sooji halwa. My small baby is fond of sweets like his dad. I have to keep my fridge full of sweets just because of him. He loves cakes, cookies kheer or halwas. My elder one love spicy and savoury food like me.I have no option other than keep making a combination of both types of them.

It was 13th Feb 2015 and everyone in my facebook group were posting these heart shaped recipes a day prior to Valentine’s Day. I was about to make sooji halwa on that day for breakfast for my kids so I thought of serving it in heart shape. I just used heart shaped cookie cutter here.

Here is the recipe
SOOJI HALWA

INGREDIENTS

Sooji or Semolina- 1/2 cup
Ghee or clarified butter-1/4 cup.
sugar-1/3 cup
cardamom powder-a pinch
Water-1 and 1/2 cup
grated coconut-for garnishing
raisins-1tbsp
METHOD

  • Melt the butter in a frying pan on medium heat.
  • Add sooji and roast to golden brown color; stirring constantly this will take about 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Sooji will be golden brown in color and will have a light sweet aroma.
  • Add water to the pan and keep stirring. Sooji will splatter a little bit. Then add sugar, cardamom and raisins.
  • Turn down the heat to medium low and let it cook for about 2-3 minutes.
Sooji will absorb the water, as the Halwa cools so keep Halwa a little more softer then you want.
  • Garnish with shredded coconut and serve hot.
