Masala Uttapam is a popular south Indian breakfast recipe. Masala Uttapm is made with the
batter which is made by grinding soaked rice and Urad dal.The ground daal and rice are left to
ferment just like Idli- Dosa batter.

Masala Uttapm is basically a thick pan cake made with this batter mixed with few vegetables. It is often eaten with sambhar or chutney.I used carrots, purple cabbage, bell pepper and onions to make Masala Uttapm, but you can add any variety of seasonal vegetables in the Masala Uttapam Recipe.

With idli-dosa batter in hand, Masala Uttapam can be prepared in less than 30 minutes.
You can enjoy this simple flatbread for breakfast, lunch or even teatime snacks. It is absolutely fulfilling.

Ingredients
  1. Idli Batter­1.5 cups
  2. salt­ to tatse
  3. finely chopped onion­ 1 medium
  4. grated carrot­ 1/4 cup
  5. finely chopped purple or green cabbage­ 1/2 cup
  6. finely chopped chopped red or green bell peppers­1/2 cup
  7. chopped curry leaves­ 4 or 5
  8. chopped cilantro leaves­ 1/4 cup
  9. chopped green chiles­ 1 or 2
  10. black pepper­ to taste
  11. red chili powder­ 1 tsp ( or according to your taste)
  12. Oil for shallow frying
Instructions
  1. In a big bowl pour the idli batter and add some all the chopped vegetables, salt and pepper. Mix
  2. well to make a batter and add water if you think the batter is very thick.
  3. Put a heavy bottomed non stick pan or non stick tawa on heat and add few drops of oil. Spread
  4. the oil everywhere using a spatula.
  5. Take 1.5 tbsp of the batter in a laddle and pour the mixture onto the pan and spread it in
  6. circular shape using the laddle.
  7. Pour few drops of oil all over and keeping the flame medium, start cooking the uttapam.
  8. Once cooked from one side, flip it over using a flat spatula and cook from another side until
  9. both the sides become brown and the batter looks cooked.
  10. Once cooked from both sides, take it out in a plate and serve hot, with any chutney of your
  11. choice.
Notes
  1. You can add any vegetables of your choice such as cauliflower, tomatoes etc.
  2. Adjust the spices according to your choice. If you are making it for kids, you can add little cheese /Paneer too to make them kid friendly.
  3. Make shapes, patterns and size differently and your kids will love these healthy savory pancakes.

Instead of eating Plain Chappatis in dinner, try stuffing them with lots of grated vegetables if you want to loose weight. This way you will end up eating less chappatis, more fiber and have full stomach too!!
